In January 2007, Apple launched its first iPhone. The company described the phone as combining three products into one handheld device: a mobile phone, an iPod and a wireless communication device. One of the original iPhone's more revolutionary features was that it allowed users to command the device using only their fingers on a touch screen. Other new functions included a visual voicemail box, touchpad keyboard, a photo library that could be linked to a remote computer and an almost nine-centimetre display for watching movies and television.
It is impossible to predict the future, but there are a few approaches that are very likely to happen to the evolution of the phone. One example we could see the future of phones becomming are modular, with a focus on less environmental impact and seemingly unlimited customizations and upgrades, modular phones would be personalized to the user and be better for the user and the planet. Another perspective would be replacing the phone entirely with digial augmentation through glasses, contacts, or unforseen technology that would do everything a smartphone could do and more.
