- 1990's -

The First Cellular Phones

The 1990s were a critical time in technological growth and the development of cell phone. From the introduction of more portable cellular phones, to the transition from analog to digital technology, cell phones were no longer just for a small niche of people. This also brought upon new services such as Neil Papworth sending the First SMS (short message service)Text Message. The technology was becoming cheaper to make and more companies started producing them creating a competitive market that would drive innovation for years.

By the year 2000, 32% of people had a cell phone

- 2001 -

The Nokia 5510

The Nokia 5510 released in 2001 contained premium features not normally found on handsets of the time, such as Infrared, a fully functional calendar and a FM Radio. Most importantly it was the very first cellphone to integrate a QWERTY keyboard.

This Nokia featured a digital music player app with the capabilities of fitting up to 64MB of audio on it.

- 2002 -

Nokia 7650

This was the first Nokia set to feature a built-in camera and was featured in the movie Minority Report. The Nokia phone boasted "a large 176x208 pixel colour display," according to a media release at the time. The Sanyo version offered three user-controlled tones, white balance and zoom.

By 2002, it became possible to locate a person using a mobile phone down to a range of a few metres, anywhere on the globe.

- 2003 -

Blackberry 6210 & 7210

Research In Motion’s first integrated phone/PDA.BlackBerry’s first colour screen.
BlackBerry 6210 was the company's first device to offer: Email, Texting, A web browser, BlackBerry Messenger service, allowing for web-based communication between BlackBerry users.

By the end of 2003, some estimates had Crackberry market share near a staggering 90 percent worldwide. Smart Phones were becomming increasingly popular.

- 2003 -

Palm Treo 600

The Palm Treo was an addictive PDA and phone combination. It has a number of integrated features and it is possible to check the calendar while talking on the phone, dial directly from contacts list, take pictures or send emails.

Pew Research Center states that in 2004, 68% of all Americans age 18 & older were internet users. According to that same survey, 74% of adult internet users were also cell phone users.

- 2004 -

Motorola Razr

Flip phones were at their peak when the Motorola Razr v3 hit the market.The V3 was the first phone released in the series, followed soon thereafter by the much improved V3i with a collaboration with Apple for iTunes to be built-in. Throughout the years, the Razr V3 sold more than 130 million units, becoming the best-selling flip phone in the world to date.

The transition to touch screen without gimicky pens or touch sensitive buttons was now imminent.

- 2006 -

LG Chocolate

The Chocolates are mainly distinguished by their touch sensitive arrow buttons and their sleek slider design. Common features of the phones include an MP3 player, games, camera and internet browser.

- 2007 -

The iPhone

in 2007 Steve Jobs and Apple changed the world when they shipped a wide-screen a revolutionary mobile phone, iPod with touch controls, and a new multitouch internet browser and device. These three products came together for one unified experience called iPhone.
